Taking a break after an earlyish morning. Happily and miraculously I slept last night. It was probably a combination of jet lag and the realization that I could actually recline beyond 10 degrees. Anyway. We managed to leave the building by 9 and headed into town. The few pics I took will not do justice to this place so I'll attempt to supplement with words. First for the enthusiasts I know, there are bikes everywhere here. Everyone rides them. You must stay on the pedestrian sidewalks or you may be in peril of being mowed down. Also there is water. Rivers, creeks, canals, fountains. And bridges. This first photo covers several of the previously mentioned features and if you look closely a heron in the background, too.
Next a plaza on the car free pedestrian river walk for lack of a better term. The river is to N's left.
And now a storefront with only one famous writer whose portrait has been mysteriously defaced (all the others seem mostly intact). You guess which one is the victim of an irate vandal:
Below N and I take a much needed rest in the shade of a colonnaded courtyard as A checks the local theater museum that specializes in what else--puppets !
And on we walked back across the river in search of lunch. On the way I took a quick pic of the same plaza (note large Renault ad in back and fountain on left edge) from a different angle and across the river so you could maybe get a better sense of scale and just how beautiful it is here.
After a traditional Indian lunch (!) during which a very unassuming little sparrow continuously dive bombed our food for rice grains, we headed back to drop off a few purchases. I couldn't resist buying some fruit at an outdoor market and because it suddenly got cloudy and cold, a jacket which I didn't think I'd need (not entirely true, Mom. The jacket I took was not warm enough! Another aside: after I bought said jacket, we happened to go by a thrift store. Maybe tomorrow we will stop in there.) so hadn't packed one. Incidentally the cherries here are different...much more fleetingly flavorful causing you to savor each one and kind of reflect on the little magic trick you just experienced on your palate. Very subtle indeed.
Here's a photo of the outside of the garret.
Oops I don't think I can add a video so you just have to wait until I figure out how to so...stay tuned...
