Zagreb on Sunday

Today was a day of walking and seeing places we've seen before and also for finding new ones.

After a quick bite for breakfast we headed toward our old apartment to take the funicular.  The door to A's left (oops I meant his right -- the building with that flight of stairs alongside it) is approximately where our old place was but up the stairs a little.  The white little building behind is the funicular ticket booth.

Once we were on the little car, a Big Bang occurred.  I heard someone say that's the canon that goes off at noon and sure enough a quick check of my phone revealed it was twelve on the dot.

Looking up the hill from inside the ticket building.

Once up at the top we walked around and found a little path I have often remembered because I liked it so much the first time we were here.  It's behind some of the houses via an alleyway and is very quiet except for some random birds.  There are benches with really great views of the city but people walk dogs up there so you must step lively.

I'm trying to take more note of all the detailed architectural hoohas.  The iron work is so pretty.  I liked the ornate scroll work of this filial and if you look closely you can see a huge perfectly woven spiderweb attached on its side.

Secret wooden stairs leading to the street below.

More architectural flourishes, mostly forgotten and neglected.

Even the trash bins are interesting.  This onelooks slightly steam punkish like it has a secret life of its own when no one is looking.

And a bookstore that hosts lots of literary cultural events.

Now we're back at our garden apartment resting up for in anticipation of the next jaunt.

If anyone cares to hear it, lunch was fantastic.  A spied a totally unassuming patio restaurant in the back of a building that had the best grilled stuff.  I'd never had anything like it.  A says it's really Serbian influenced so I'll take his word for it.  It was very meat oriented but a little went a long way.  My favorite was a sausage-like patty that was grilled directly onto a slice of sourdough-like bread that had been basted with a lightly herbed oil.  Ok, I'm getting hungry again.

As I mentioned, we're recharging our batteries before our next foray.  Here's Adsy near the window laxing.

  1. Looks lovely.

Funny, the only time I heard the term "funicular" was in Eastern Europe.

    Miss you.
