On the way back from Duino, instead of stopping in front of our apartment we continued on the bus as it wended its way down the steep hill into town. We disembarked in the center and found our way to the ferry, destination: Muggia.
We had a little time before it left so we stopped at a farmacia and bought some mosquito repellant and anti-itch cream for Nathanael.
For 4 euros each we got to ride on this very comfortable boat. We had the entire interior to ourselves. Everyone was upstairs catching the last of the hottest part of the day al fresco on the upper level while we enjoyed cushioned seats in the shade. Say that five times fast.
Leaving Trieste:
Eventually I coaxed the guys out onto the lower deck where there was a hint of sea breeze.
Approaching Muggia:
We found this fantastic little trattoria and for the second time a very nice proprietoress gave us a table even though we did not have a prenotare. Before we could sit down, though, we had to wait for the waiter to arrive so we left N to sit at one of the tables on the little private very peaceful piazzetina (is that even a word, Mom?) and took a short walk.
Muggia is so beautiful and serene and seems untouched by the outside world in this old part of town. People keep these pocket gardens along the walkways. This is one direction of this walk...
...And this is the other.
Everyone hangs their freshly laundered clothes out to dry.
These potted plants remind me of yours, Mom!
Omg. The cozze were indescribable. I wished I could have taken a picture of the taste and the smell. They were prepared alla dalmata I think was their title, in the Dalmatian style.
I won't bore you with more food pictures. We left Muggia later than we had anticipated and had to take a bus back to Trieste which was an experience in itself. Anyway the 42 had finished its run by the time we reached Trieste so we were forced to betray it with...a cab. Our first this entire trip. My feet were quite relieved.

Ok, we've found our destination: Muggia. And that trattoria. The boat was nice too with its wooden decks. Lovely gardens and sort of reminded me of Manayunk but, of course, lovelier. --M ps. food pictures are not boring!. You've solved our July 4 getaway problem...and all the other ones (problems)... P
