Utrecht 1

The train ride to Utrecht was so uneventful I can't even remember it. I do recall the landscape changing noticeably, though from Germany to the Netherlands. The light kind of shifted and the clouds began to assert themselves as if to make known they played just as important a part in the overall composition as any old building or geologic feature.

Anyway, when we detrained, I frantically checked my phone for the directions from our host, Hilla, that I had cut and pasted into a note in case there was no wifi. But there was! Our first sign of civilization here was free wifi almost city-wide.

Hilda's directions said to go through the train station and then make a left at the bike parking lot and walk along the canal until we came to the second bridge. Well, I had to stop and gape at the first landmark. The bike lot:

This is just one section of one of hundreds of lots like it. It makes Davis look like an impostor. So anyways, after that insane looking situation, we continued on down the canal as directed.

And came across this contraption:

Eventually we found the apartment. And then promptly headed out to explore. There was a fire somewhere close by but it was soon extinguished to our great relief.

We walked into town. It was late, almost 11 but it stays light later here.

We found an Italian restaurant open called Il Pozzo, the well. It was on the lower level of the canal street and carved into the street. The ceilings were vaulted and it was like a very charming cave. The food was delicious. I had a salad with tuna, A had caprese and N had a pizza of course. A little cat sat by our table and kept us company while we ate. I tried to give it a bit of tuna but it wasn't interested.

I promise these are probably the first and last food pictures!

And it was like 11 when I took these pics:
